Instructions for Replacing Mechanical Seal (Shaft Seal) on Ruth-Berry Pumps
- DRAIN TANK FIRST, then remove Pump assembly from tank by removing wires and 10 tank flange bolts.
- Remove the two 1/4″ cap screws and diverter cover for the impeller.
- Use a 5/16″ Allen wrench to loosen the two set screws in the shaft collar. Older models might take a smaller 1/8″ Allen wrench.
- Remove impeller and seal assembly. If the impeller is stuck, you may use two screw drivers inserted on each side of impeller but do not apply too much pressure on the impeller or it may become damaged.
- The rubber seat for the seal may be removed with a screw driver.
- After all parts have been thoroughly cleaned, install new rubber seat in bracket: for easy installation, use a small amount of oil or heat proof grease (do not use Vaseline) on rubber (but be careful not to scar face of seat). Insure that the ceramic discs face each other during installation.
- Replace other parts as they were removed. Reprime pump before starting pump motor. In most instances it is advisable to replace the motor bracket gasket (cork seal gasket).
