The Air Booster is designed to help provide the required amount of air in the tank of a Ruth-Berry jet pump to prevent water logging. It is used in conjunction with a type "L" Air volume Control to regulate the amount of air injected into the tank. The type "L" A.V.C. is used on Ruth-Berry Jet pumps.
The Type "L" Air Volume Control is a float operated device, controlling a small spring operated valve which allows air to be drawn into the suction side of the pump or into the inlet of the Ruth-Berry Air Booster, according to the type of installation. The type "L" Air Volume Control functions as follows: The water rises in the tank, lifts the float, depresses the air valve and thus allows the vacuum from the pump suction or Ruth-Berry Air Booster to draw air through the air inlet hole in the type "L" Air Volume Control. A pressure gauge is mounted top side of this Air Volume Control. The pressure passage to the pressure gauge is directly into the interior of the tank.
The Ruth-Berry Air Booster is a small special brass jet. Water from the tank pressure or the down pressure pipe is fed through this jet creating a vacuum greater than can be produced by the suction alone. By tapping into this small jet this extra vacuum can produce the amount of air required by the system. The extra air produced is "boosted" into the system and gives rise to the term "Air Booster."
On all Ruth-Berry tank mounted pumps a brass inlet fitting is provided onto which a snifter valve is installed for the purpose of air induction. The secondary function of this valve is to hold the pressure in the system when the pump is not running. The valve core of this snifter valve requires seven inches of vacuum to open and allow air to enter. On an installation where the vacuum is low it would be necessary to use the Air Booster to increase the vacuum sufficiently to operate the air induction system. Various adaptations of the Ruth-Berry Air Booster to suit the type of Ruth-Berry Jet pump and the conditions are illustrated in figures 1-5.
